ABC news' Carole Simpson
I just caught a portion of some panel discussion on C-SPAN including a segment with a woman named Carole Simpson who currently works for ABC news. She held up a map showing the recent electoral map of the United States, and commented as to her theory that since most Americans aren't intelligent, they voted for George Bush. Claiming that 70% of Americans STILL believe that Saddam had something to do with 9/11 (he didn't?), she declares that our future is bleak since the parents don't understand the news, neither will their children.
Most interestingly, however, was her comment as to why she entered the journalism business in the 1960's. As I recall, she indicated that she thought she could "change America" by using the media to teach Americans what was/is important. She further went on to give the obligatory snide remark as to why those who listen to Rush Limbaugh are not getting news as opposed to those who either watch ABC news or read the NY Times.
Her current job with ABC is to travel to high schools teaching students why they should be more involved with the news cycle and why she thinks that it's important for young people to take an interest in the news. She opines that young people who don't read the NY Times or watch ABC will continue to be uninformed, and by implication vote for people "like" George Bush.
How arrogant are these people? Ma'am, you don't get it. People ARE watching the news, just not YOUR version of it. We've decided that in the day of cable and internet, we don't need dinosaurs like you using news to shape our views. Perhaps if you went back to fair and honest reporting and leaving the filtering to the viewers and readers, you'd regain your lost market share. Ms. Simpson reports that people like me scare her because I get information from places other than her employer. Rest assured, the feeling is mutual.
