Why States' rights are important
Walter Williams makes a great point in this column why the "one size fits all" federal government policies creates division among Americans which could be otherwise avoided. I firmly believe in the 9th and 10th amendments to the US Constitution. I believe that issues such as education, welfare, gay marriage, and taxation are better left to State governments.
For so many years, the left was all too happy to have the federal government usurp control over American society, so long as their leftist policies were being implemented. However, now that the President wants implement his version of appropriate policy, the left is singing a different tune. Perhaps the left will wake up and actually read the Constitution and begin to understand what the 9th and 10th amendments are all about and why people like me find them to be such an appealing alternative to the "one size fits all" solutions currently being offered by our federal government.
I strongly believe that 50 states each adopting their own version of a "just" society would ultimately create a stronger nation because nobody would have a reason to feel excluded. If you like high taxes and government welfare, move to California. If you like gay marriage, move to Massachusetts. Just don't abuse the "full faith and credit" clause trying to impose your view onto everybody else. That is how and why we have such polarized people in America today. My community will live as we see fit, and yours will do so as well.
